KOREA TIMES `Equally guys are as beautiful as women; there's Miss World, so why not (have a Mr World)?'' Miss World Organization Chairwoman Julia Morley said during a previous visit to Seoul. Indeed, the stunning Andre Kim charity fashion show, held Tuesday in Incheon as part of the Mr World 2010 contest underway in Korea, showcased the hallmarks of masculine glamour and style. `If previous fashion shows highlighted feminine beauty for the delight of men, this event features beautiful masculine styles for women to marvel at,'' said Kim, Korea's top designer, who provided the creations. Moreover, in the spirit of the contest's humanitarian ideals, all proceeds from the event will go to the International Vaccine Institute (IVI). The United Nations research center based in Seoul will use the money to help North Korean children. Some 250 VIP guests were invited to attend the fourth and final event of the preliminary round of the competition to find `the world's most desirable man.'' Only 15 were selected as top models. `They are all very handsome,'' Kim said about the contestants. While overseeing the rehearsal session Monday, he particularly noted Greece's Dana Lampros, Luxembourg's Carlo Marino, New Zealand's Arnold Arthur Du Toit and Sweden's Alexander Shirpey as standouts. The event opened with opening remarks from Morley and Incheon Mayor Ahn Sang-soo, before lights and grand classical music announced the start of the big show. A retinue of men led by Brazil's Jonas Sulzbach seized the stage wearing colorfully striped track suits. The sporty numbers represented the hopeful spirit of the 2018 Winter Olympics, for which Korea's city of PyeongChang is a bidder. The second stage continued with contestants of Indonesia, Costa Rica and England among others wearing darker colors. In a stage celebrating the upcoming FIFA World Cup in South Africa, the segment featured velour, and crystal-studded track suits paired with boots rather than sneakers for a more classic look. Also shown were black-and-white jackets and pinstriped pants evoking an equestrian look. `It's really wonderful and different,'' said Tarek Mohammed Nagiub Abdel Gawad, who has experience as a model back home in Egypt. The atmosphere slowly transitioned into a black dress code. The third stage, inspired by European royal costumes, was marked by pomp and circumstance. The national representatives of Japan, Macedonia and Peru, among others, wore outfits that Napoleon may have worn, with silky suits complete with a sash draped across the shoulder and sparkly brooches and medallions adorning the chest. While the designs ranged from pale icy blue to deep grayish green to black and white. The next segment featured `the fantasy of the tuxedo.'' `Tuxedos are a must when it comes to special occasions,'' said Kim. The models du jour showed off everything from dark tailcoats to pure white designs embellished with golden embroidery. The show culminated with the fifth and final stage inspired by traditional Korean court costumes. Kim said the designs are modern reinterpretations of court clothing from the Three Kingdoms Period (57-668), Goryeo (918-1392) and Joseon Kingdoms (1392-1910). The puffy, draped creations featuring fantastic golden dragon embroidery invited awe from onlookers. Mr China and others showed off a charcoal gray, pleated piece while others showed off tangerine gold, purple, deep navy, white and electric blue. `It's big and flashy, and makes me feel imperial,'' said Venezuela's Jose Manuel Flores Sanchez. `I wish to promote Korean aesthetics through the Mr World participants. For most of them it's probably their first time in our country, and I hope they go back home with fond memories, and spread the word about the beauty and technological assets of Korea,'' said the Top Designer Andre Kim. For Romania: infoFashion.ro Platinum Agency / Camelia Seceleanu The line-up of official judges at the Mr World 2010 Final was: Julia Morley MWO Chairman, President of Variety International, the Children’s Charity and Chairman of the Mr World Judges Tom Nuyens Mr World 1996 – the first title holder and a successful model, from Belgium Zhang Zilin Miss World 2007, now face of L’Oreal and Swarovski, from China PR Ksenia Sukhinova Miss World 2008, top model and celebrity, from Russia Andre Kim World famous and Korea’s most celebrated designer Krish Naidoo Miss World Organisation International Ambassador Kaiane Aldorino Reigning Miss World from Gibraltar Joo-ri Kim Miss Korea 2009, who represented Korea at Miss World Kim Bong-nam, more widely known as Andre Kim, was born to rural farmers in Goyang, Gyeonggi-do, in 1935. Graduating from the Kukje Fashion Design Academy, Kim opened "Salon Andre" in central Seoul in 1962 at the age of 27, becoming Korea’ first male fashion designer. In 1966 he held a fashion show in Paris, a first for a Korean fashion designer. Later he had fashion shows in New York, Washington, Barcelona, Cairo, Sydney and Beijing. He was named as the chief designer for the 1981 Miss Universe Beauty Pageant and in 1988 he designed the uniforms of the Korean athletes for the Seoul Olympic Games. In 1997 he was presented with the Presidential Culture and Art Medal for his contribution to the fashion industry. In 2003 he was awarded Italy’s Cultural Merit Award and was elected as UNICEF’s goodwill ambassador. In November 2006, Kim showcased his costumes representing the beauty of Korea at Angkor Wat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, in Cambodia. The show titled "Fashion Fantasia: Angkor Watt" is the first of its kind ever held with the ancient temple as a backdrop. His distinctive designs are represented by the bold, rich colors and motifs of Asian patterns including large roses, birds and tree branches. For the 73-year-old fashion designer, who still holds almost 20 fashion shows a year, a fashion show is not just about introducing new collections, it is an artistic performance showing off fashion and sophistication. His choice of classics as background music makes for an elegant and dramatic mood and white-toned settings bring out the unusual colors of his designs. The highlight of his fashion shows is the final stage, featuring white suits and wedding dresses romantically embellished with Kim’s symbolic designs. The wedding dress show is particularly renowned for showcasing famous Korean celebrities. Walking down the catwalk wearing in the designer’s clothes is widely considered a great honor for a Korean celebrity and for young actors the stage is a huge opportunity to be recognized to the public. (Photo: The Korea Herald) Based on connections with top celebrities, Kim holds an award ceremony called "Andre Kim Best Star Awards," to honor pop stars or cultural figures who are considered to contribute to the cultural development of Korea. With many top profile celebrities attending the ceremony, the media in and out of the country pay a keen attention to the star-studded shows. Kim always wears all-white outfits, which is said to be his favorite color. Once American pop star Michael Jackson asked him to be his personal designer but he declined the proposal, saying "his clothes were for everyone." Since 2001, the designer has ventured into the fashion license business, lending his name to such varied products as a lingerie line, eye wear, golf wear, cosmetics and children’s wear.
